On “Kyle Hines Night,” the Spartans started fast and never looked back. With the score tied at 5-all at 17:44 in the first half, UNCG went on a 23-4 run to jump out 28-9 with 12:04 to go. The Mocs struggled to chip away at the lead trailing 40-24 at the break.
The Mocs closed to with 14 quickly in the second half (45-31), only to see the Spartans jump back with six unanswered to go up 51-31. Seven straight points by Nicchaeus Doaks cut the lead back to 13. But as they did with every UTC run, the Spartans answered.
Senior Marcus Watts scored a career-high 22 points on the night playing like a man possessed. He also had a team-high six boards. Doaks contributed 17 points, 15 in the second half, to go with five rebounds. The duo combined to shoot 15-of-24 (62.5%) from the floor, while the remainder of the team shot 10-of-36 (27.8%).
As was fitting on “Kyle Hines Night,” Hines led all scorers with 26 points on the night where his number was retired. Mikko Koivisto added 22, while Kevin Oleksiak tossed in 18.
The Mocs won the battle of the boards 41-33, but turned the ball over 28 times on the evening.
