CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team took the first set, but Western Carolina (6-10, 1-0 SoCon) fought back to take the match, 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-18,25-20), on Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center. Sophomore setter Bridget Camacho (Cumming, Ga.) notched her fourth career double-double with a career-best 45 assists and 11 digs for the Mocs (2-12, 0-1 SoCon).
Junior libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) paced the match with 30 digs. It was the second time this season that she hit the 30-dig plateau.
Chattanooga totaled a match-best 53 kills on the afternoon as sophomore outside Jennifer Kuroski (Acworth, Ga.), freshman outside Jessi Blackstock (Killen, Ala.) and junior middle blocker Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) recorded at least 10 kills each. Kuroski registered 15 kills, while Blackstock added 13 and Teter had 12.
Western Carolina was led by Carrie Minogue with 12 kills and Brittany Lysik had 33 assists, while Morgan Cochran recorded 16 digs.
In the first set, the teams battled through the first eight rallies before Chattanooga took an 8-4 lead on a kill by Kuroski. The Mocs stretched the advantage to 19-11 following a block by the duo of Blackstock and Camacho. Chattanooga closed out the frame with a 25-20 victory as Passmore totaled 10 digs.
The second set began as Chattanooga rode the strong serving of Blackstock and Camacho to an 11-6 lead. A kill by Kuroski put the Mocs up 20-13 before the Catamounts went on a 17-2 run, a turning point in the match, to finish the set, 25-22, and tie the match at one. Chattanooga notched 13 kills, but registered 11 mistakes as opposed to two by their opponent.
After intermission, both squads battled point-for-point during the first 24 rallies before Western Carolina pulled ahead 20-16. The Catamounts then notched three-straight kills on their way to a 25-18 victory. A 14 kill effort was highlighted by six kills for Kuroski, but nine attacking mistakes and four service errors hindered the Mocs progress.
During the third frame, Western Carolina led the entire time with the Mocs trailing by three points for most of the set. Final score of the set was 25-20 as the Catamounts secured a 3-1 victory.
The turning point of the match was a 17-2 run for Western Carolina to close out the second set with a 25-22 victory. The Catamounts rode that momentum to secure victories in the third and fourth sets.
