Polk Leads Mocs at Roberta Alison Tournament

Three Mocs advance to finals in singles action.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team scored seven singles wins on the first day of competition at the Roberta Alison Fall Invite in Tuscaloosa, Ala., today. Senior Katie Polk led UTC with two victories on the day.
Polk competed in the Taylor Lindsey Draw and won her opening match (6-1, 6-4) over Iowa's Carin Runefelt. She advanced to tomorrow's finals with a tough (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) win over UAB's McKenna Root.
Competing in the same bracket is freshman Mckenzie Barco. She also won twice and is in the finals. She defeated Kennesaw State's Cristina Martin (2-6, 6-1, 6-0) after receiving a first-round bye.
To keep Polk and Barco from having to play each other in the finals, they will flip semifinal opponents. Barco will play Root of UAB and Polk will play Martin of Kennesaw State.
Rachele Gazzola also had a strong day with a pair of wins. She beat Kennesaw State's Alexandra Mercado (7-5, 6-0) in the first round of the Jenny Ketchum Draw. She followed that with a (4-6, 6-3, 6-0) win over Samford's Annika Hepp to advance to the finals.
Senior Kelsey Coots and freshman Delaney Edwards also had wins in today's action. Gazzola and Barco teamed for the only UTC doubles victory in four matches.
Action resumes tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. (E.D.T.) with singles, followed by doubles action in the afternoon. Barring any weather delays, play will conclude on Saturday. Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for complete updates.
