UTC Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to UNCG

Chattanooga dropped a five-set match on the road to UNCG on Saturday.
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball dropped a tough 3-2 (26-24, 17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 8-15) match on the road against UNC-Greensboro on Saturday afternoon.
The loss knocks the Mocs to an 11-9 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the SoCon. The Spartans improve to 10-10 on the year and 5-3 in SoCon play.
Chattanooga claimed the first set by taking 13 of the game's final 20 points after falling behind 17-13 to the Spartans. The second set saw UNCG build a 17-10 lead over the Mocs and finished the set trading points for a 25-17 victory. In set three, points were scored in back-and-forth fashion as the set was knotted up at 22-22 before UTC scored the next three points to win the set and take a 2-1 lead. The fourth set was another back-and-forth type game as the biggest lead was only four points from either team. With the game tied at 20-20, the Spartans claimed five of the next seven points to push the match to a fifth set. In the deciding fifth set, UNCG jumped out to a 9-5 lead and held on from that point to take the set 15-8, and the match, 3-2.
The Mocs were out-played on the offensive side as they were out-killed 72-57, out-hit .253-.200 and out-assisted 67-54. UTC, however, controlled the net as they put up a season-high 13.0 blocks compared to UNCG's 6.0 total blocks.
Leading the block party was Dani Szczepanski (Cincinnati, Ohio) as she collected a team season-high and new career-high 9.0 total blocks, posting a single solo block and eight block assists. Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) followed with 5.0 total blocks, all block assists, and four other Mocs chipped in with 2.0 total blocks.
Staying on the defensive side, Rachel Petkosh (Merritt Island, Fla.) registered 29 digs, a new five-set high for the season. Miranda Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) posted 15 digs, Madison Bergren (Muncie, Ind.) added 13 digs and Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) totaled 12 digs.
Offensively, three Mocs found double-digits in kills as Wieser led the team with 14 kills (.297), Elpers finished with 12 kills (.135) and Szczepanski collected ten kills (.400). Eden Murray (Hoschton, Ga.) tied a season-high with nine kills (.280) on the day and Davenport added seven kills.
Directing the offense was Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) and Bergren who finished the contest with 31 and 17 assists, respectively. The 31 assists for Greenspoon was the most in a match since posting 33 in a loss at Dayton on Sept. 3.
Chattanooga will return to the court for a three-match home stand beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 19, against Samford at 6 p.m. inside Maclellan Gym. Further media coverage information including weekly notes will be available leading up to the match on Wednesday.
