Carr, Boykin Lead Mocs at the Scuffle

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga seniors Bryce Carr and Scottie Boykin led the Mocs to an 11th place finish at the prestigious Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, in McKenzie Arena today. Carr placed third at 184 pounds, while Boykin finished fifth at 197.
Top-ranked Penn State won its sixth team title with 197 points. Northern Iowa was second with 127 points, followed by Lehigh (102), Navy (87) and Duke (80).
Penn State's Shakur Rasheed was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 197 crown. The Nittany Lions' Bo Nickal took home the Gorrarian Award with five pins in just 10:51.
Boykin had the most exciting match of the evening for UTC. After losing in overtime to Penn State's No. 8 Anthony Cassar, Boykin was matched up against No. 11 Matt Williams from Cal State Bakersfield.
Williams opened with a takedown, but Boykin scored a reversal with just 16 seconds left in the first period. He went up 5-2 with an escape and takedown in the second, but Williams pulled to 5-3 before the close of the frame.
Williams then escaped in the third and scored a takedown of his own for a 6-5 lead. Boykin escaped with just over a minute left and got the crowd on its feet with a takedown with three seconds left.
Carr lost in the semifinals earlier in the day 2-0 to No. 9 Drew Foster. Foster also handed Carr his only loss in last year's Scuffle, 6-4 in overtime. He beat navy's No. 19 Michael Coleman (2-1) to advance to the third place bout against N.C. State's Nick Reenan.
After a scoreless first, Carr took a 3-0 lead on an escape and takedown in the second. Reenan chose neutral and cut the lead to 3-2 with a takedown late in the third. Carr went up 4-2 with an escape and was hit with a stalling penalty with just over 10 seconds left for the final score. For Carr, it was his second, third place finish at the Scuffle.
Junior Roman Boylen also had an outstanding tournament. He finished in eighth place at 149 pounds with a 5-3 record.
Up next for the Mocs is a trip to the Virginia Duals on Jan. 12-13 in Hampton, Va. UTC's next home match is Jan. 19 against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 7:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Maclellan Gym. Tickets for that match are on sale now on GoMocs.com.
