Schmidt Adds Chen to Women’s Golf Staff

Former Charlotte and UAB golfer Shelly Chen is joining the Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf coaching staff.

Chattanooga Mocs Head Women's Golf Coach Annie Schmidt announces the addition of Shelly Chen to her coaching staff. Chen, a former NCAA Division I golfer at Charlotte and UAB, joins as assistant coach.

Breakdown
  • Chen spent the last two seasons as graduate assistant at Jacksonville State.
  • A native of Taiwan, she came to the states in 2019 joining UAB's program in the COVID-shortened campaign. Chen spent two years with the Blazers recording four top 10 finishes.
  • She transferred to Charlotte to complete her final three years of eligibility.
  • Top finish was T4 at the 2020 Hoover Invitational while at UAB.
  • Low round and 54-hole totals came at Charlotte. She tied for 11th with a 2-over 212 at the 2021 Evie Odom Invitational with a second-round 68.
  • Chen aided in several top 3 finishes for the Gamecocks the past two campaigns including runner-up at the 2025 Conference USA Championships and 2025 Chris Banister Golf Classic.
  • Helped Rebekka Stutley to CUSA Freshman of the Year honors in 2025. There were three all-conference nods with the Gamecocks as well with two in 2025 (Lara El Chaib/Rachel Camp-third team All-CUSA), while Stutley also made third team all-league in 2026.
  • Chen is not the only addition to the squad. Three Mocs are set to return to the squad in junior Bella Bugg and sophomores Erin Wells and Rugile Pauliukonyte. Fall signees Elizabeth Jang (Cherry Valley, Calif.) and Claire Roberts (Kitchenor, Ontario) stayed in the fold while Kentucky transfer Maggie Carlson committed as well for 2026-27.
 
Summer Update
  • Pauliukonyte is off to a great start this summer. It started with a runner-up finish at the Lithuanian Golf Federation Cup and was followed by successfully defending her title at the Lithuanian Amateur.
  • Bugg got her summer schedule simmering with a top 10 as well. She tied for ninth at the Southern Georgia Amateur.
  • Former SoCon Golfer of the Year and Chattanooga native Jordan Britt '14 returns to the area in July. Married to former Mocs wrestler Kevin Malone, the couple operate Rooted Living Wellness in Bluffton, S.C. She is competing in the Tennessee Women's Open July 23-25 at Stonehenge Golf Course in Crossville.
