BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team fell 3-0 to Samford Friday night at Bulldog Field. The Mocs fall to 3-11-2 overall and 1-5-1 in Southern Conference play while the Bulldogs improve to a league-best 12-4 on the year and 7-0 against the conference.
"We were down just 1-0 at the half and I felt we defended really well," UTC head coach Gavin McKinney said. "I felt we did the same in the second half for the most part. However, we made little mistakes and were punished."
Samford's first half goal came on a putback after Malcanisha Kelley's shot caromed off the cross bar. Hallie Georgi picked up the rebound for the first goal of the game in the 24th minute to make it 1-0.
In the second half, Grace Packer scored her first goal of the year when Taylor Borman was able to get the ball past Chattanooga keeper Katie Emig (Knoxville, Tenn.) as she came out to defend. Packer picked up the ball and shot into the right side of the net.
Samford would get just one more goal when Sara Smeltzer took a cross from Ella Baggett and got around a Mocs defender and keeper at the 73:06 mark to make it 3-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.
"We're looking to put together a full 90 minutes," McKinney said. "We still have some work to do. We will continue to push ourselves together as a team to get better."
Emig made five saves in her 11th start this season. Sophomores Peyton McCollum (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and McKenzie Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) each had two shots for the Mocs and Emily Moseley added one more in the match. Samford outshot UTC 20-5 and had a 9-1 shots on goal advantage.
The Mocs close out the regular season next weekend with a pair of road matches beginning with a Friday night contest at Western Carolina before ending the season at ETSU on Sunday.
