GREENVILLE, S.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team posted a 2-1 Southern Conference victory over The Citadel Tuesday night at Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. The match was a make-up after Sunday's meeting was postponed due to historic flooding in Charleston, S.C.
The Mocs improve to 3-8-2 on the year and 1-2-1 in league play while the Bulldogs fall to 1-12 overall and 0-3 against the conference.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Mocs scored twice in the second half to get their first league win since defeating The Citadel 3-2 in 2012.
"This was a huge win for us," Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. "Maybe this will give us some momentum going into the matches this weekend."
The Citadel score first on an unassisted goal from Mady Riegel who got past both the Chattanooga defender and keeper to put the Bulldogs on the board first in the 25th minute. That score would stand through halftime.
In the 65th minute, senior Skylar Brewer (Farragut, Tenn.) picked up a punt from freshman keeper Molli Miller (Maryville, Tenn.) in the 66th minute and went 1 v 1, sending her shot into the net for the equalizer.
It wouldn't take Chattanooga long to get what would prove to be the game winner. At the 71:48 mark, freshman Maddy Coleman (Georgetown, Ky.) from the left, whipped a cross into the back post where senior Clare Latham (Cordova, Tenn.) picked it up and finished with a shot into the left corner for the game winner.
"It was great that we found a way to win when we were down at the half," McKinney said. "It was great to find a way to come back into the game to equalize and then to find a way to win."
Chattanooga outshot the Bulldogs 19-11 and held an 8-5 shots on goal advantage. Miller had four saves in the match while The Citadel's keepers combined for six. Starting keeper Kim Mora had three saves in the opening half while Abby Koger made three saves while giving up both goals to the Mocs.
The Mocs will close out the home slate with a pair of matches this weekend. Chattanooga will host UNCG Friday night then honor its seniors prior to Sunday afternoon's match against VMI.
