Track Closes Out Season at SoCon Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's track team wrapped up the outdoor season with a 10th place finish at the Southern Conference Championships Friday afternoon.

Junior Hannah Chamblin (Memphis, Tenn.) placed sixth in the finals of the women's 800 meter run, earning three points for the Mocs on the final day of competition. She just missed her season-best with a time of 2:15.87.

"With the quality of the field, she had to stay in touch on the first lap and put herself in position to have a shot of placing," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "She did that to perfection and accelerated through the field in the last 150 meters. It was an incredible effort by Hannah."

Freshman Nicole Buehrle (Sugarloaf, Pa.) reached the 1500 meter finals in her first outdoor season, finishing 10th overall with a time of 4:53.80, improving on her prelim time from Thursday.

"Nicole missed the finals in the indoor season by just one place," Meyer said of his freshman. "This was a little redemption because making the finals is great for a freshman. She showed mental toughness by coming back in less than 24 hours to run the same time."

Sophomore Brianna Nelson (Jefferson, Wis.) led three Mocs in the 5000 meter finals, placing 14th overall with a personal best time of 18:52.43. Freshman Rebekah Wich (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was the next UTC runner across the line with a time of 19:27.46 followed by Sydney Gilliam (Brentwood, Tenn.) at 20:48.29.

"Brianne competed well through the race with a PR," Meyer said. "Rebekah has been a huge surprise for us all season. She didn't run as she had hoped, but she still put in a solid effort."

The 4x400 meter relay team, made up of three freshmen and a junior, wrapped up the day with its best time of the season at 4:06.02. Freshman Abby Bateman (Jefferson City, Tenn.) led off the race for the Mocs, running it in 60 seconds. Classmates Julia Henderson (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Buehrle followed for the middle legs with Chamblin bringing it home.

"The young girls saw and experienced what it will take to be successful at this level," Meyer said. "This experience gained will go a long way in their future development."
