POOLE TAKES FIFTH IN WOMEN'S 5000 METER ON DAY ONE OF ETSU INVITATIONAL

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Emily Poole took fifth overall in the women's 5000 meter final Friday night on Day One of the ETSU Buccaneer Invitational.

Poole won her heat, finishing more than 20 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Her time of 18:24.64 was behind four finishers in the first heat.

"Emily ran just fast enough to get a fast heat mark for conference," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "She cruised her race, lapping everyone in her heat and some more than once. She still has a tough 3000m race tomorrow."

Mercedes Bright ran the 60 meter Dash in a time of 8.51 and then ran the 200 meter Dash prelim in a time of 28.70. Taylor Sawyer placed fourth in her heat in the 200m in a time of 30.24.

"Mercedes had a much improved start and acceleration over her last race and we have to have her hold it over the last 20 meters," Meyer said.

Nicole Buehrle was third in her heat in the 400 meter Dash with a time of 1:03.78.

"Nicole did great in the 400m," Meyer said. "She was two seconds off her PR and she is coming off an ankle injury. We also had her run in trainers, not spikes. Once she gets back to full training, she'll tear it up."

The Mocs will wrap up competition Saturday with several final events including the 3000 meter, 4x400 meter and the 800m Run.

"We hope to continue with our solid performances tomorrow for both the women and men."
