AUBURN, Ala. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga runner Haley Morris led a strong showing for the Mocs with a PR in the 3000 meter Steeplechase at the War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn University.
Â
"We had another good day with Haley [Morris] placing and finishing with a PR," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "Abby [Bateman] ran the 400 at 50 and less than 15 minutes later ran a hard 800."
Â
Morris covered the course in a time of 11:40.30, nearly eight seconds faster that her previous best set last season at the War Eagle Invitational.
Â
Abby Bateman ran back-to-back races on the day. She ran a UTC season-best in the 400 meter with a time of 1:00.66 and then turned around to race the 800 meter. She was the second Chattanooga runner across the line at 2:23.78. Katie Coker clocked the Mocs' best time Saturday in just her first 800 meter run this season at 2:21.93. Ashlynd Broling at 2:24.00, was just shy of her season-best.
Â
Also running a first this season was Rebekah Bryant in the 100 meter at 14.13. Rebekah Hampton posted a 16.53 in the 100 meter hurdles. In the long jump, Hampton had her second best distance at 5.01 meters and Bryant jumped 4.87 meters.
Â
"Ashlynd, Katie and Taylor Sawyer were all at season-bests in very competitive races," Meyer said. "Gavin and Ryan PR'd in their respective races."
Â
The men's cross country team ran several unattached Saturday. Gavin Hasty posted a time of 1:55.49 in the men's 800 meter run, a personal best. Mark Britt led the Mocs in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:06.22, placing fifth. Ryan Gebelein was sixth with a time of 4:06.42 and John Payne was ninth at 4:15.48.
Â
"This was a great build up meet for the SoCon," Meyer said. "The kids go into their last phase of training knowing they are in top shape. We will rest them a little then train hard for a bit and begin the conference taper!"
Â
Some will run in the ETSU Tri Star Invitational next weekend in Johnson City, Tenn., as a final tune up. The Southern Conference Championships, hosted by Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C., will be May 10-11.
