The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga soccer team battled Belmont to a 1-1 draw in exhibition action at Finley Stadium this afternoon. The Mocs got a tying goal from junior
Bailey Gale in the 72
nd minute to even the score.
Match time was moved up to 3:00 p.m. due to storms in the area, but there was still a lightening delay of nearly two hours. Since this was exhibition play, the contest ended after 90 minutes with no overtime.
Freshman
Maggie Shaw put the first shot on frame in the 11
th minute, but it was handled by Bruin keeper Lily Herman. The ensuing possession led to the Bruins first goal when Jessi Boozer put one over UTC goalie
Ashton Shields from 40 yards out.
Sophomore
Catherine Meyer put another one on frame in the 19
th minute and sophomore
Chloe Arnold hit the post late in the first half. UTC went into the locker room trialing 1-0.
UTC controlled possession for most of the second half, and finally broke through with Gale's goal in the 72
nd minute. She collected a loose ball in the box and put it over the keeper's head in the upper left corner.
"Positive first outing for us after 5-6 days of training," stated UTC head coach
Gavin McKinney. "I thought we did a nice job of connecting and maintaining possession, particularly as the game wore on. I think that is part of new faces and getting some nerves out and getting the girls used to playing with one another. All-in-all, a good first match."
Up next for the Mocs is another exhibition match at Tennessee Tech on Aug. 12. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) in Cookeville, Tenn.
