BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's track and field team wrapped up competition Sunday on the final day of the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium in Birmingham.
Â
"The team, all across the board, competed to the very best of their abilities and had season best or personal best races this weekend," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "We could not be prouder of the determination and effort these young ladies exhibited."
Â
The Mocs had seven Top 10 finishes on the second day, scoring in six races. In the women's 1500 meter final, junior Kennedy Thomson placed fifth and ran a PR 4:27.26, earning four points for the Mocs. Nicole Buehrle legged it out at the end, passing several runners, to grab eighth and a point in the race with a time of 4:34.37, just missing her PR.
Â
"Kennedy ran a great race to place fifth and Nicole was patient and let the race come to her and scored for us," Meyer said.
Â
The women's 4x100 meter team got the day started, scoring for UTC with an eighth place finish in a time of 54.81. Rebekah Hampton added another point with her 17.03 finish in the 100 meter hurdles.
Â
Nicole Buehrle finished eighth in the 400 meter Hurdles and the Mocs 4x400 meter relay team closed out the day with a seventh place finish. Thomson hit her kick on the final turn and passed ETSU to take seventh for the Mocs.
Â
Nicole was again able to hang in a very fast race and scrambled well to place in the 400 hurdles," Meyer said. "Rebekah had a very good hurdle race and did not give up, placing eighth.
Â
"Our 4x100 relay was able to overcome a couple less than perfect handoffs to place eighth. The 4x4 team ran a very strong race and upset a couple of teams to place seventh," Meyer said. "Nicole and Kennedy, running on fumes, both showed impressive heart and resilience and were able to close the race out well."
Â
Chattanooga finished the day ninth with 15 points and host Samford won the event followed by Wofford and Western Carolina. ETSU placed fourth with Furman fifth and Mercer sixth. VMI and The Citadel tied for seventh.
Â
"Overall, Coach [Michael] Gadson had our relays prepared and Coach [Amanda] Cotter had our mid-distance girls focused," Meyer said. "It showed with some impressive performances. Several meet records were broken in the distance races and our girls were right in the mix. We are beginning to see points coming from events other than the distance events and that's exciting."
