Soccer Travels to Western Carolina Thursday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women's soccer team will head to the mountains of Western Carolina to take on the Catamounts Thursday in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

The Catamounts lead the series 12-9-3. In Cullowhee, N.C., Western Carolina leads 7-4. The two teams have only met in the regular season.

LAST TIME THEY MET
With mere seconds remaining, a flick of the head turned an almost certain draw into a win. Birna Johannsdottir's corner kick found Mackenzie Smith at the goal with just three seconds remaining to secure the Mocs fifth win of the conference season. UTC outshot the Catamounts 11-2 while hitting the crossbar once and the post two more times. Eight different Mocs recorded shots in the match with Smith, Johannsdottir and Caroline Richvalsky recording two apiece. Keeper Caroline Ekern added a fifth shutout and seventh win in her record-setting freshman campaign.
 
ABOUT CHATTANOOGA (8-3-1, 2-1-1 SoCon)
The Mocs started the SoCon season with back-to-back wins before falling at ETSU in the first road match. Back at home, the Mocs came away with a draw against Furman, the second in two years. UTC has 21 goals on the season and averages 16.8 shots per game. Caroline Richvalsky leads the team with six goals and two assists for 14 points. Birna Johannsdottir has a team-best six assists and three goals for 12 points. Mackenzie Smith scored the equalizer against Furman for her fourth goal of the season and entered the Mocs top 10 for goals and points this season. Caroline Ekern has started 11 games and has a 1.20 goals-against average and a .764 save percentage.
 
ABOUT WESTERN CAROLINA (6-3-3, 3-1 SoCon)
The Catamounts opened Southern Conference play with a 1-0 win over Samford. After falling 2-1 to Furman at home, the Cats claimed back-to-back home shutouts against UNCG (4-0) and Wofford (5-0) to move into a tie for first with ETSU. WCU has 25 goals on the season and averages 13.8 shots per game. Naya Marcil leads the team with 21 points with seven goals and seven assists. Isabella DeMarco is second with 20 points on eight goals and four assists. She, along with Maggie Lloyd, has two game winners. Leanne Trudel has started all 12 games for the Catamounts in the net. She has allowed 12 goals this season and made 35 saves with a 1.06 GAA and a .745 save percentage. She has five shutouts and one combined.
 
COMING UP
The Mocs will host VMI Sunday, October 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Finley Stadium. Chattanooga will honor it's seniors Mackenzie Smith, Birna Johannsdottir and Sofia Andrade before the kick off. It will also be our Breast Cancer Awareness Game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
