HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- Chattanooga's Lesley Boyd finished 10th overall and led the Mocs women's cross country team to a 10th place finish at the Southern Showcase at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala. The men, led by Aaron Isbell, finished 15th overall.
Â
"Both programs ran and competed well today," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said.
Â
The women finished 10th overall ahead of Georgia, Middle Tennessee and Auburn. Lesley Boyd finished with a time of 17:02.25 and Maddie Wheatcroft just missed her PR with a time of 17:53.46.
Â
"The women had a very strong showing," Meyer said. "They held back for the first mile and accelerated through the field for the next two miles."
Â
Leah Boyd was the third Chattanooga runner to finish and posted a personal record time of 18:07.99. Brooke Tyll was next, cutting more than a minute off her PR with a time of 18:27.24. Freshman Amanda Ferrante was the fifth scoring runner across the line and Lexi Foley also posted a PR with a time of 18:53.26.
Â
"Maddie and Leah, Brooke, Amanda, Lexi and Audrey [Wade] worked hard the last two kilometers. We had a couple kids not run well, but with the depth of talent we had it still was an impressive showing."
Â
In the men's race, Isbell finished with a time of 25:19.64 with Jack Martin not far behind at 25:36.35.
Â
"The guys ran a little conservative for the first couple miles and then started to work," Meyer said. "The guys as a team were 23rd at the halfway point and finished 15th out of 41 teams."
Â
The men matched Samford at 15th and finished ahead of ULM, South Florida and Florida Gulf Coast.
Â
"Aaron, Jack and freshmen Ian [Etheridge] and Derek [Mitchell] were under 26," Meyer said. "Kaigen [Mulkey] and Riley [Hanson] were right behind them."
Â
Etheridge was Chattanooga's third finisher (25:41.45) and Mitchell was next with a time of 25:53.86, both running their first collegiate 8-kilometer race. Kaigen Mulkey was the fifth Moc runner across the line and posted a PR of 26:05.68 and Riley Hanson, also with a PR, finished next for UTC with a time of 26:17.74.
Â
"We are pleased with our performances and we will move from a volume based approach now to a more speed specific approach to continue our fitness progression" Meyer said.
Â
Alabama claimed both team and individual titles in each race. The Tide women, ranked 12th in the USTFCCCA, placed all five scoring runners in the Top 25 and were led by Doris Lemngole in first and Pheline Cheruto in second. The men, ranked ninth, placed all five scoring runners in the Top 22 and placed three in the Top Four. Victor Kiproptook first ahead of Louisville's Ian Kibiwot.
Â
Up next for the Mocs is the prestigious Live in Lou Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 5 at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.
