Freshman Start Strong in Track Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Junior Maddie Wheatcroft posted a pair of Top 10 finishes Friday at the Chattanooga Mocs Indoor Track and Field season opener, the Samford Invite. Freshman Stella Henry also posted a Top 10 finish in her first collegiate indoor meet.
"It was good to finally dust off the cobwebs earlier today in Birmingham after being snowed out last week," Mocs assistant coach Patrick Gildea said. "Everyone's training has gone well though there's no way to replicate race days nerves away from competition."
Wheatcroft posted a personal best in the 800 meter finishing eighth with a time of 2:18.43. Freshman Taylor Crawford paced her heat with a time of 2:28.23.
Stella Henry placed 10th in the long jump with a distance of 5.29 meters (17-04.25 feet).
In the Mile Run, Wheatcroft placed 10th overall with a time of 5:08.20 in the fast heat. Freshman Audrey Wade led a slew of Mocs in the fourth heat, with junior Andrea Ellis right behind.
The day started with freshman Ryleigh Simmons falling just short of qualifying for the second round of the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.89 seconds in her first collegiate event at the distance.
Sophomore Michaela Dabney recorded a PR in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:03.13. Freshman Ellie von Herrmann led the Mocs in the distance event with a time of 10:44.35.
In the 200 meter Dash, freshman Ryleigh Simmons finished second in her heat with a time of 26.74 and sophomore Ava McGue took third in the eighth heat. McGue was just shy of her personal best in the high jump.
"We now have a baseline of where we're at as we inch closer to the Southern Conference Championships," Gildea said. "We had a few personal bests, a couple of near misses as well as a few debutants with both groups plus two heat wins.
"All said, we had a productive day and it's back to training tomorrow. The Mocs Baton award went to Ryleigh Simmons to kick off this indoor campaign."
