Volleyball Starts SoCon Tournament with No. 5 UNCG

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Mocs Volleyball team has concluded the regular season and is set to begin the SoCon Tournament in Asheville, North Carolina. Chattanooga finished conference play with a 10-6 record, giving it the No. 4 seed in the SoCon Tournament. The Mocs are matched up against UNCG, the No. 5 seed, in the Quarterfinals, with the two scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start time on Friday morning.

How They Fared in the Regular Season
The Spartans won both meetings between the two teams. On October 3, UNCG won in Maclellan Gym by a score of 3-1. The Spartans and the Mocs split the opening two sets before UNCG won sets three and four by scores of 25-18, and 25-14. In the second match of the year against the two schools, a road game for Chattanooga, each set was decided by four or fewer points with UNCG taking all three by scores of 27-25, 25-22, and 25-21. 

Series Notes
Chattanooga leads the all-time series against UNCG 37-24. Up until this season, the Mocs had won six consecutive matches in the series, dating back to 2022. This is the third time the Mocs and the Spartans have met in the Conference Tournament, with the last time coming in the Quarterfinals of the 2017 SoCon Tournament, with UNCG winning 3-1. in 2016, the Mocs defeated the Spartans in the SoCon Semifinals 3-2 to advance to the Championship Match. 

All-Conference Recognition
The SoCon released its All-Conference Teams and Yearly Award winners yesterday as both the Mocs and the Spartans had players make the cut. For Chattanooga, Senior Outside Hitter Sydney Jackwin was named to the First Team while Freshman Middle Blocker Jordin Glass, won Freshman Team honors. For UNCG, Sophomore Outside Hitter Allie Sweet was tabbed First Team All-SoCon. Additionally, Freshman Middle Blocker Connore' Siler Nixon was named to the Freshman Team. 

Scouting Chattanooga
The Mocs come into the Conference Tournament winners of three matches in a row, all against SoCon opposition (Western Carolina, The Citadel, Furman). Offensively they are led by Jackwin, who has 368 kills to her name on the year and averages 3.44 per set.  Ashley Reynolds with 632 assists (5.91 per set) and Chiara Napoli with 353 assists (3.72 per set) have been a dynamic duo as the Mocs' setters. Chattanooga's defense is led by Caiti Barthel, who leads the league in digs with 515. At the net, Kynli Kirkendoll and Glass have been strong with 102 total blocks and 80 total blocks, respectively.

Scouting UNCG
UNCG is coming off an impressive 3-0 sweep of Wofford in its final match of the regular season. On the scouting report, goal No. 1 for Chattanooga will be to stop Sweet, who leads the SoCon in kills with 443 and kills per set with 4.34. She has seven matches this season with 20 or more kills, including 23 against the Mocs in the first match between the two schools this year. Mckenna Timmerman with 263 kills (2.89 per set) and Robin Rosser with 227 kills (2.23 per set) are two other important players in attack for the Spartans. Setting up these three attackers for UNCG is Gabby Seeds who averages 9.61 assists per set, ranking second in the SoCon. On the defensive side of the net, Chloe Nussbaum leads UNCG in digs with 467 and 4.58 per set. Sweet has a team high 55 total blocks on the year. 

Bracket Talk
The winner of Friday's game will not play again until Saturday at 4 p.m. They will play the winner of No. 1 ETSU vs No. 8 The Citadel/No. 9 Western Carolina in the Semifinals. The Bulldogs and the Catamounts play today at 4 p.m. to earn the right to play the No. 1 seeded Buccaneers. The Championship Match is set for Sunday at 4 p.m.
