NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Chattanooga outhit Lipscomb 11-5 and produced scoring in the second and fifth frames, but a five‑run second inning by the Bisons proved to be the difference as the Mocs dropped a 5-4 decision Wednesday afternoon at Lipscomb's Draper Diamond.
The Mocs (10-11-1) struck early in the second when
Mia Leone put Chattanooga on the board with a leadoff solo home run to left‑center, her third of the year, giving UTC a 1-0 lead. Two batters later,
Anna Dovey drew a walk and came around to score on a two‑out RBI double by
Raven Jones, extending the lead to 2-0.
Lipscomb (5-14) answered in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on four walks, two wild pitches and a pair of Chattanooga errors to plate five runs on three hits.
UTC tightened the game in the fifth, beginning with
Annika Segedi's infield single - her third hit of the game. After she moved to second on a wild pitch,
Baileigh Pitts drove her in with an RBI double to right‑center. Pinch runner
Jade Gainer later scored on
Abi Bunt's sacrifice fly to left, trimming the deficit to 5-4.
Chattanooga threatened again in the sixth with back‑to‑back singles by
Ava Cowart and Segedi, but Lipscomb's bullpen induced consecutive groundouts and a flyout to strand both runners. The Mocs put another runner aboard in the seventh, but a pair of late defensive plays by the Bisons closed out the one-run contest.
Segedi led all hitters with a 3‑for‑3 performance, a walk and a run scored, while Pitts went 2‑for‑4 with a double and an RBI.
Anna Dovey was 1-for-2 with two walks and
Chloe Lackey was 2-for-4.
Chattanooga received 5.0 innings of one‑run relief from
Emery Bales, who allowed only five hits and struck out one after entering in the second and gave up one earned run.
The Mocs week continues this weekend at the Milisa Moore/Shane Lamb Tournament hosted by Central Arkansas in Conway. The Mocs will take on the host Bears and visiting UL Monroe. Due to the threat of inclement weather, the tournament schedule was changed Wednesday and may still see some changes before the weekend is over.
