Mocs Drop Season Finale to UNCG 4-3
4/16/2016 9:32:00 PM | Men's Tennis
UTC now turns its attention to hosting the SoCon Tournament next weekend.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team fell 4-3 to UNCG on Senior Day Saturday at the Champions Club.
The Mocs fall to 7-14 overall and 1-6 in Southern Conference matchups, while the Spartans improve to 9-12 overall and 2-5 in league play.
"It was a big match for us today and we still had a lot to play for," head coach Carlos Garcia said. "I will give credit to UNCG for playing very well today, especially in the doubles. We've been playing really good doubles in the last couple of matches, but we just didn't play very well in the doubles today, and some days that happens."
Chattanooga fell in an early 1-0 deficit after UNCG won the doubles point. The duo of Luke Saunders and Lucas Plesky lost 6-2 at No.1, while Nick Wingord and Michael Birnbaum fell 6-0 at No. 3.
At No. 2, John Peacy and Derek Brown faced off the Spartan's Logan Walker and Warren Bryan in a close match that resulted in a tiebreaker. UNCG went on to win the match 7-6 (11-9).
In the singles competition, the Spartans took the match 4-0 with wins at No. 4, 5 and 6, but the Mocs saw victories at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles to finish the match 4-3.
At No. 3, senior Nick Wingord defeated UNCG's Warren Bryan 6-4, 6-2 to give Chattanooga its first team point. UTC found its next two team points with close, tie-breaker victories.
Junior Lucas Plesky fell in the first set 6-2 to the Spartans' Connor Thompson, but rallied back to take the second set 6-4, followed with a 10-2 tiebreaker win. Senior Luke Saunders followed with an 0-6 first set loss, but came out with a hard-fought victory in the second set, eventually winning the match via tiebreaker (0-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8)).
"The seniors are just leaders and have done a great job being leaders," head coach Carlos Garcia said. "They show up every day and take care of their business off the court. They play relaxed and it has shown in their tennis. If you do that, then your mind is pretty clear when you play, and I'm very proud of them."
The Mocs begin postseason play with the Southern Conference Tournament from Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24, where the competition will take place at the Champions Club.
"We just have to get off to a better start in our doubles and singles come Southern Conference tournament," Garcia said. "But I definitely have to give credit to our top three who made this match competitive. That was huge. Unfortunately the match was decided at that time we took some momentum into next Friday in the first round of the championships."
