CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's track and field team will close out the regular season Saturday, April 23 at the Auburn War Eagle Invitational at Hutsell-Rosen Track.
Â
The Mocs will compete in various sprints and distance events as well as middle distance and steeplechase competitions.
Â
Junior Maddison Melchionna (Afton, Tenn.) will compete in the women's 800 meter run. She holds the school record in the event in indoors and is edging closer to it in the outdoors.
Â
"She has a chance to make it the the [NCAA] region," Chattanooga head coach Bill Gautier said. "She deserves the experience."
Â
Melchionna ran a season-best 2:09.95 at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational. That time is second best in the Southern Conference this season behind Samford's Karisa Nelson's 2:09.09.
Â
Also running the 800 will be Jessica York (Normandy, Tenn.) in the third of five heats. Slated to run in the fifth heat, the Mocs will have Anna Kate Chance (Columbia, Tenn.), Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario), Helenka Kis (Columbia, Tenn.) and Lily Mckee (Knoxville, Tenn.).
Â
The women's 1500 meter run will be highlighted by Hannah Chamblin (Memphis, Tenn.) who ran a top time this season of 4:42.26 at the end of March and Anna Kate Chance who leads a crew of Mocs in the second heat.
Â
"Hannah's a tough, tough runner," Gautier said. "She ran the race of her life at Western Kentucky. She has come into her own this year.
Â
"Anna Kate knows we really need her in the 1500 at the conference meet. This meet is for her to see what she can really do."
Â
Haley Morris (Lenoir City, Tenn.), Madison Watson (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Katie DeMars (Knoxville, Tenn.) along with McKee and Henderson will also compete in the middle distance event.
Â
"This is Teghan's first true outdoor meet this season," Gautier said. "She ran a leg of the relay in the last meet because we needed her to fill a spot, but now she's going out to see where she really is. She's had a really good career at UTC."
Â
Kiaana Howard (Nashville, Tenn.) will run the 400 meter for the Mocs and Emily Drouin and Morris will take part in the 3000 meter Steeplechase.
Â
"I'm excited for Kiaana," Gautier said of his senior. "This is her first opportunity to compete in outdoor this year due to injury.
Â
"Emily was one of our four freshmen last year who produced and had a really good freshman year. She stepped up. I'm impressed with her attitude and desire. She does everything really well."
Â
Makala Diggs (Box Elder, S.D.) will run the 200 meter. DeMars and Kis will run the 5000 meter and the Mocs will have a team in the women's 4x400 meter relay.
Â
Several members of the men's cross country team will be competing Saturday. Mark Britt (Lebanon, Tenn.) will run the 800m, 1500m and the 5000 meter races. John Payne (Portland, Tenn.) will join him in the 800m and the 1500 meter races.
