BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Kennedy Thomson took first in the women's mile in the Mocs' indoor track season opener Sunday at Emory Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Â
Thomson, from Catharine's, Ontario, finished the Mile run in a time of 5:02.61 in her first collegiate meet. She was nearly two seconds faster than her nearest competitor.
Â
"Kennedy was real patient," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said following his first indoor meet as head coach. "She took the lead at the 800 and stretched it out from there. She did really well."
Â
Senior Anna Kate Chance (Columbia, Tenn.) was fourth in the 5000 meter with a time of 18:32.83.
Â
"Anna Kate got in with the leaders," Meyer said. "She got in with the leaders and had a really good kick. She ran a very smart race."
Â
Freshman Julia Henderson (Brentwood, Tenn.) ran the 800 meter run in a time of 2:24.19, finishing third in her heat. Freshman Hannah Caldwell (Brentwood, Tenn.) also had a good showing in the 3000 meter run. She 14th overall with a time of 11:02.72 and classmate Rebekah Wich (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was 16th in a time of 11:08.25.
Â
"Hannah had a good race in the 3000," Meyer said. "She made some tactical mistakes and if you're not aggressive enough, you get pushed back."
Â
Of the 14 members of the team racing this weekend, only one was a senior. The Mocs traveled 10 freshmen and three sophomores to Birmingham.
Â
"For our first race of the season, we had a lot of really good and solid efforts," Meyer said. "We're only going to get better from here."
Â
The Mocs head to Greensboro, N.C., next Sunday for the UNCG Dual Meet Madness in Winston-Salem, N.C. Results will be available following the meet at GoMocs.com.
