CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's track team will head to Birmingham, Ala., this week for the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Â
"We have several who have a chance to make the finals or the Top 10. It is the goal," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said.
Â
The Mocs are fielding a very young team with seven freshmen, three sophomores and a pair of juniors.
Â
"If they can reach the finals as freshmen and sophomores, that will go a long way for next year," Meyer said.
Â
Juniors Anna Kate Chance (Columbia, Tenn.) and Hannah Chamblin (Memphis, Tenn.), the most senior members of the team, will run the 5K and the 800 meter respectively.
Â
Chamblin's top time this season in the middle distance is 2:15.38, nearly two seconds behind her PR set last season at Western Kentucky and ranked eighth in the SoCon. Chance will have the opportunity to improve on her personal best 18:18.43 set last year at Vanderbilt.
Â
Sophomore Mercedes Bright (Kingsport, Tenn.) will run in both the 100m and 200m while freshmen Kelsey Henry (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) and Taylor Sawyer (Chattanooga, Tenn.) will run in the 200m and 400 meter dashes.
Â
Sophomore Brianna Nelson (Jefferson, Wis.) will run the 5K along with Chance as will freshmen Rebekah Wich (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Sydney Gilliam (Brentwood, Tenn.). Wich holds the Mocs top time this season in the distance race at 18:31.67 and is 15th in the league standings through the regular season.
Â
Sophomore Haley Morris (Lenoir City, Tenn.) will carry the torch for Chattanooga in the 3000 meter Steeplechase. She posted her season-best time of 11:48.74 at the War Eagle Invitational, ninth in the conference rankings.
Â
Sophomore Madison Watson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) along with freshmen Abby Bateman (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and Maddie Christian (Lenoir City, Tenn.) will run the 800. The 1500 meter will be all freshman with Nicole Buehrle (Sugarloaf, Pa.), Julia Henderson (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Hannah Caldwell (Brentwood, Tenn.).
Â
Chattanooga will conclude the meet with a team in the 4x400 meter relay.
Â
Live stats will be available on the track schedule page at GoMocs.com. Complete results will be posted online as they become available.
