
Track Set to Run at SoCon Indoor Championships

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's indoor track and field team will head to the Southern Conference Championships this weekend at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Va.

"We are looking forward to this weekend," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "The girls have worked hard and had some great workouts in prep for this meet. We have had several girls set PRs in their respective events already this season and we hope to continue this trend."

Mercedes Bright will compete in three sprint events. She posted a personal best time of 8.21 at the 2016 SoCon Championships in the 60 meter Dash. Earlier this season, she ran an 8.43 at the BSC Panther Indoor Icebreaker. She will also run the 200m and the 400m dashes.

The Mocs will run three in the 800 meter run. Abby Bateman ran a PR 2:18.05 at the ETSU Buccaneer Track and Field Invitational. Taylor Sawyer, who ran her first 800m this season, and Ashlynd Broling will join Bateman in the race.

Haley Morris will look to improve on her PR of 5:15.43 in the Mile. Julia Henderson and Brianna Nelson each also recorded personal bests in the Mile. In the 3000 meter run, Hannah Caldwell improved on her best time at the Samford Open in January. She will run alongside freshman Sophia Neglia who had a career-best time of 10:20.08 at the ETSU Buccaneer Classic.

Cross country all-conference runner Emily Poole will lead the Mocs in the 5000 meter run along with Rebekah Wich who placed 15th at the SoCon Championships.

"We are looking for good races form Abby Bateman in the 800," Meyer said. Also Brianna Nelson in the mile, Hannah Caldwell and Sophia Neglia in the 3000 and of course Emily Poole and Rebekah Wich in the 5000. Both the 4 x 400 and DMR relays are set for strong showings."

Taylor Grayson will be the lone field athlete competing this weekend. She will set a PR of 10.50m in the Shot Put at the Samford Open this season.

The Distance Medley Relay will be the last event on Saturday while the 4x400m will run last on Sunday to close out the championships.

Chattanooga will look to improve upon its seventh place finish last season. Results will be available online at GoMocs.com will a recap to follow at the conclusion of each day.
