Track Previews SoCon at Catamount Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's track and field team will head to Cullowhee, N.C., this weekend for the Beynon Sports Catamount Classic just a few weeks before returning to the same track for the Southern Conference Championships.
Â
"This is a conference meet preview," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "It's a great way for the field athletes to measure and get bearings correct on throwing pits and runways. That way our kids will not be seeing them for the first time at the SoCon meet."
Â
Taylor Grayson will get the meet started for the Mocs with the hammer throw at 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. Rebekah Hampton and Rebekah Bryant will follow with the long jump at 3:30 p.m. The day's events will wrap up at 7:45 p.m. with Sophia Neglia, Brianna Nelson and Emily Poole in the women's Elite Mile.
Â
Saturday competition for Chattanooga will kick off just after lunch with Nicole Buehrle, Hannah Caldwell and Julia Henderson in the 1500 meter run. Hampton will participate in the 100 meter hurdles in the next hour.
Â
Several runners will be in unfamiliar events this weekend as the Mocs distance runners will take part in the shorter races.
Â
"Some, if not most, of our running athletes will be competing in some alternate events to work on some weak areas," Meyer said.
Â
The 400 meter dash will feature distance runners Sophia Neglia, Brianna Nelson, Emily Poole and Rebekah Wich. Eight runners will hit the track for the 800 meter race.
Â
Abby Bateman ranks sixth in the SoCon standings in the middle distance race. She will be joined by Buehrle who is eighth on the league charts, Ashlynd Broling who ranks 13th and Neglia who sits 21st in the SoCon. Also running the 800m are Caldwell, Nelson, Poole and Taylor Sawyer.
Â
Bryant and Hampton will take a shot at the triple jump and Grayson will wrap up the field events with the shot put. Haley Morris will close out the meet for UTC with the 3000 meter Steeplechase.
Â
"The runners have competed three of the last four weeks, so a little rest and fun this weekend is needed as we head to Auburn next week for high level competition," Meyer said. "We hope the weather cooperates with us as it looks a little iffy Saturday. So far we've been in inclement weather the last couple of meets so it really isn't anything new for our girls."
Â
Live scoring will be available at GoMocs.com on the track and field schedule page. Complete results will be posted at the end of competition each night.
