Mocs Host UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic This Weekend

This is the 36th year of the fall tennis event at UTC.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team hosts the Steve Baras Fall Classic this week. This is the 36th year of the tournament and includes five teams joining the Mocs for four days of head-to-head competition.
"The UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic is always the highlight of the fall season for our program," stated UTC head coach Chuck Merzbacher. "We are able to host this individual tournament in a team setting to get some important play heading into the spring season."
Action takes place at the UTC Tennis Center on Thursday, Oct. 31, through Sunday, Nov. 3. Thursday's matches with North Alabama and Chattanooga may move to the Strang-Voges Tennis Center at McCallie at 6:00 p.m. due to inclement weather in the forecast. A complete schedule of competition is available at the bottom of the page.
Individuals are paired up in each round by team with 1-6 in the lineup competing against each other. The doubles are the same format, with 1-3 facing off. Singles and doubles champions are crowned based on the scoring system listed below.
"We have some of our talented younger players getting a chance to see where they stand after a solid fall," added Merzbacher. "This tourney will give our fans a chance to see how bright our future is."
The Steve Baras Memorial Scholarship Endowment is set up in memory of former UTC men's tennis player Steve Baras. The annual recipient of the scholarship is a Business major who is also a member of the Mocs tennis program.
"We are able to honor one of our own, Steve Baras, in this event," explained Merzbacher. "All the teams come together for a strong competition in his name, and the Baras family."
