Cross Country Runs at NCAA Region Friday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga men's and women's cross country teams headed out Wednesday afternoon for the 2019 NCAA South Region Championship meet hosted by Florida State. The meet will be held at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla.

Both teams will run their longest distance of the season. The men's course will cover 10-kilometers while the women will run their second 6K this year.

"We are looking forward to a great race this Friday from everyone," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "We have had a good 13 days of practice leading into this meet. The guys will have a tough 10K for running and this is a very fast course at FSU."

The men will carry six runners Friday including top runners Ryan Gebelein and Jonathan Boyd. Gebelein, the lone upper classman on the men's squad running this week, will conclude his collegiate cross country career with this race.

On the women's side, Abby Bateman and Hannah Caldwell are also closing out their careers. They will be joined on the course by All-Conference performer Makenzie Jones and all-freshman teammates Lesley Green and Mattie Parker.

"All three seniors have been solid contributors to this program since they set foot on the campus," Meyer said. "They have raced hard and been team leaders, especially this year."

All are top student-athletes in their fields. Bateman was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American last season.

"They have fought through some adversity and injuries, but were always positive influences on their teammates. More importantly they are all great students in very difficult majors. Ryan in Nursing, Hannah and Abby in Business. Their time here has flown by."

The women's race will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the men's race to start at 9:30 a.m. Results will be available following the meet on GoMocs.com and streaming video is accessible for a fee through FloTrack.org.
