KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga runners Kennedy Thomson and Nicole Buehrle had good showings Friday night at the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., on the Tom Black Track.
Â
Thomson ran both the 800 and 1500 meter races while Buehrle took part in her second 1500m this season.
Â
In the 800 meter race, Thomson kept up with the lead runners in the first 400 of the race with a 1:03.95 on the first lap. She ran the second 400 meters at 1:06.12 in the second heat.
Â
"In the 800, Kennedy looked great, positioning and navigating the field," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "The race went out a bit slow and she had a great kick to finish well."
Â
Penn's Nia Akins took first in the race with a time of 2:03.76 and Furman's Emma Kuntz was 10th in the first heat and 12th overall with a time of 2:09.92,
Â
Just an hour later Thomson was toeing the line along with Buehrle in the 1500 meter.
Â
"After running the 800, we wanted Kennedy to let the pack do the work and hang out for the first 800 in the 1500," Meyer said. "She did and made a strong move to run a PR."
Â
Thomson placed 17th overall with a time of 4:33.88, edging out her personal record posted earlier this season at the Raleigh Relays.
Â
Buehrle covered the distance in a PR time of 4:40.62, running the fourth heat.
Â
"Nicole had specific splits to hit in her race and she was right on," Meyer said. "She ran a great last 300 to PR by more than five seconds."
Â
Virginia Tech's Rachel Pocratsky was the first across the line with a time of 4:20.10 in the faster heat. ETSU's Lindsey Stallworth placed 10th (4:29.36) followed by Furman's Kristlin gear in 12th (4:29.80). Thomson placed ahead of two other ETSU runners in the race.
Â
"We are proud of the girls and their fitness levels," Meyer said. "Now comes the rest and taper needed for them to make another level jump."
Â
The Mocs will head to the Auburn War Eagle Invitational next weekend in preparation for the Southern Conference Championships at the end of the month.
