Mocs Travel to Central Arkansas for Fall Action

UTC faces the host Bears, along with Missouri State and Louisiana Monroe this weekend.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team kicks off the 2020-21 season with a trip to Central Arkansas this weekend. The Mocs are participating in the Bears' four-team event in Conway, Ark., on Sept. 18-19.
"The team is very excited about this weekend," stated head coach Chad Camper. "We really want to take off where we left last season. We are trying out some new doubles lineups and I want to see us win with some variety."
Joining the Mocs and UCA are Missouri State and Louisiana Monroe.
All eight individuals from UTC plan to participate, led by juniors Bogdana Zaporozhets and Emma Van Hee. Van Hee led the team with a 16-7 singles mark in 2019-20, while Zaporozhets teamed with freshman Jessie Young for a 10-2 mark at No. 2 doubles.
Due to the COVID-19 waiver that allowed 2019-20 spring sports participants to keep their year of eligibility, UTC does not have a senior on the team for the second year in a row. There are also no true freshmen, so all eight team members return with collegiate experience.
Young posted a 14-7 mark last year, playing mostly No. 1, and leads a talented group of returning underclassmen. Sophomores include Caroline Gibbens, Polina Goloputova and Lilly Holmes. Callie Billman and Grace Anne Dunavant join Young in the freshman class.
Van Hee and Gibbens played No. 1 singles most of the spring, climbing as high at No. 76 in the national rankings. Their 6-4 upset over Tennessee's No. 8 tandem of Kaitlin Staines and Tenika McGiffin should have them ranked again when the 2020-21 listings are posted by the ITA.
