Cross Country on the Road to the SoCon Championships Friday Morning
10/25/2023 3:21:00 PM | Cross Country & Track & Field
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga men's and women's cross country teams are headed to Kernersville, N.C., for the 2023 Southern Conference Championships hosted by UNC Greesnboro Friday morning at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex.
Â
"We are very excited to run this championship meet," head coach Andy Meyer said. "Both teams have had a good lead up and have been working out well over the last few weeks. The ladies have really put things together over the last month or so.
Â
"Lesley [Boyd] has been outstanding. Emma [Russum] and Maddie [Wheatcroft] have been gaining confidence each week. Kathryn [Vradenburgh] has had a little sickness but seems to be back. Leah [Boyd] has been working out much faster than about a month ago. Brooke [Tyll] has had a great freshman year and Andrea Ellis has been improving over the last couple weeks. Another freshman, Lola Baker, has been getting stronger each week."
Â
The women's 5-kilometer race will start at 10:00 a.m. Graduate student Lesley Boyd earned a pair of SoCon Runner of the Week honors and was twice named the league's Student-Athlete of the Week. She posted a personal best time of 16:38.3 at the Mocs home meet two weeks ago for her second sub-17:00 5K.
Â
"Team wise, Furman is nationally ranked and looking to be as strong as ever," Meyer said. "We will be in a battle with Samford and ETSU for spots two through four and if anyone slips up or has a bad day, Mercer and UNGC will be right there. This conference is about as close as I can remember for spots two through about six. We must stay focused and run smart to do well as there are so many good and improved teams."
Â
On the men's side junior Aaron Isbell and freshman Jack Martin have share leading duties for the team. Isbell picked up from last season, leading the Mocs through the first three meets. Martin picked up the pace at the Mocs home meet, taking first.
Â
"The guys are also coming into form. Jack and Aaron have looked good over the last few weeks and well as another freshman, Tristan [Gould]. Eamonn [O'Bryant] and Jasper [Wilson] have steadily improved all year. Kaigen Mukley, Eric Mitchell and Erik Martinez have also shown improving fitness.
Â
"Team wise again Furman is way above everyone, followed by ETSU a step down, then comes Mercer, UNGC, Samford, WCU and us all pretty close together. Like the ladies, if we have a good day, we could be 4th and if we falter, we could be 7th. We must run smart and not make any mistakes."
Â
The men's 8-kilometer begins at 10:45 a.m. Live results are available online at GoMocs.com on the cross country schedule page.
