Cross Country Heads to NCAA Region Friday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the NCAA South Region Championships hosted by the University of Florida this Friday morning in Gainesville, Fla.
Â
"We are looking forward to finishing our season with a strong showing at the regional meet," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "This is a new regional course but having run the course in early September gives us an advantage over other teams.
Â
The women's 6-kilometer race will start at 8:30 a.m. at the Mark Bostick Golf Course followed by the men's 10-kilomter race. The Mocs ran shorter distances earlier this season at the course in a preview meet for the region championships.
Â
"The longer distance of both races certainly suits our kids," Meyer said. "It is forecasted to be very warm on race day so pacing and hydration will be essential."
Â
The women entered the South Region Top 15 last week.
Â
"The ladies, if they run to their potential, could be in the top 15," Meyer said. "Lesley [Boyd] has a shot at the top 25. Maddie [Wheatcroft] Emma [Russum] and Kathryn [Vradenburgh] must stay together and accelerate through the race with Leah [Boyd], Andrea [Ellis] and our freshman right behind them.
Â
"This team has gotten better every meet throughout the season and I hope we are able to continue that trend."
Â
The men's race is slated for a 9:30 a.m. start. Jack Martin and Aaron Isbell have led the Mocs throughout the season.
Â
"The guys must run their best races of the season to have a shot at a top 15 finish," Meyer said. "Jack and Aaron have been our leaders all season. Eammon [O'Bryant], Jasper [Wilson], Tristan [Gould], Kaigen [Mulkey] and Erik [Martinez] must run well and as a pack."
Â
Live scoring is available online at GoMocs.com on the cross country schedule page.
Â
HEAD COACH ANDY MEYER – SENIOR RECOGNITION
Finally, we need to recognize our seniors/graduate runners participating in their last cross country race of their careers.
Â
Kathryn Vradenbugh has been wonderful. Even though she was here just one year as a grad transfer, she has been a huge part of our success. She has a tremendous attitude and is a great teammate.
Â
Emma Russum has been here for four years and has had a huge impact on our program. She is so coachable, she is also a great teammate and has a great sense of humor. We will definitely miss her.
Â
Jasper Wilson has been a great leader for our men's team. He has kept them focused on our goals. He holds them accountable during workouts and he at times has sacrificed his own success in order to promote the success of our team which is the true definition of a leader. He will be missed greatly.
