CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga men's and women's cross country teams are headed to Greenville, S.C., for the 2024 Southern Conference Championships at the Furman Golf Course Saturday morning.
Â
"We are very excited to race the conference meet this Saturday," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "Both teams have had a very good year and solid training leading up to the meet. Coaches Patrick [Gildea] and Sarah [Phillips] have done a great job all year long and I have no doubt will have the kids ready for Saturday."
Â
The men's 8-kilometer race begins at 10:00 a.m. with Furman predicted to retain the title for a ninth consecutive year.
Â
"Furman's men have had an exceptional year," Meyer said. "They are definitely the team above everyone else. There is a log jam of teams fighting for second through about the fifth spot. Samford, Mercer, ETSU and us have been neck and neck all year long. These four teams are matched that close and it will be a dog fight!"
Â
Aaron Isbell and Jack Martin are the leaders for Chattanooga headed into the championships.
Â
"We are looking forward to Aaron and Jack leading us up front, but the race will be won by the place and determination of our 3-6 runners, Riley [Hanson], Ian [Etheridge], Derek [Mitchell], Eamonn [O'Bryant] and Kaigen [Mulkey]," Meyer stated.
Â
The women's 5K is slated to start at 10:45 a.m. Lesley Boyd claimed two SoCon Runner of the Week nods this season and finished Top 10 in all three races.
Â
"Furman's women have been outstanding this year and are the standard to beat," Meyer said. "Samford's women have had a great season, and we have been able to slowly chip away at their advantages. ETSU and Mercer will be right on our heels."
Â
"Lesley will be up front for us and again our success will really be determined by our 2-7 runners," Meyer said. "Maddie [Wheatcroft], Leah [Boyd], Brooke [Tyll], Amanda [Ferrante], Lexi [Foley] and Andrea [Ellis]. They have to be strong and race to their fullest potential."
Â
Live stats will be provided by Snap Timing with official results posted following the meet at GoMocs.com.
