Referred to as “the greatest halfback in a 10-year period” by legendary UC Head Football Coach Scrappy Moore, Jerry Ward (1952-55) was an outstanding football player. Prior to his Chattanooga career, he received scholarship offers from such schools as Tennessee, Auburn and Vanderbilt.

As a senior in 1955, Ward earned Small College All-America recognition. He was also the recipient of the Edwards Memorial Award as the Most Valuable Player. That year, he led the team in rushing, receiving, scoring, kick returns, punting and interceptions.

He helped the Mocs win 21 games over his four year career, including victories over such teams as Memphis State, Louisville and Tampa in 1952; Tampa, Xavier and Dayton in 1954 and Mississippi Southern, North Texas and Memphis State in 1955.
