CHATTANOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's track team will open the indoor season Sunday at the Emory Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Â
The Mocs are fielding a young team for the first meet of the season with just one senior on the squad, three sophomores and 10 freshmen.
Â
"We are taking a very young team down for this meet," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "This is a great chance for the girls to gain experience. College indoor track will be an eye-opening experience for many of them. The lap counts are thrown off and the banking is very different. The constant physical contact during the race take adjustment time.
Â
Brianna Nelson and Kennedy Thomson will get the meet started for the Mocs with the Mile Run at 11:30 a.m. followed by the 400 meter dash featuring Nicole Buerhle, Abby Bateman and Maddie Christian at 12:50 p.m.
Â
Julia Henderson and Haley Morris will run the women's 800 meter followed by the 3000 meter with Sydney Gilliam, Rebekah Wich and Hannah Caldwell.
Â
Anna Kate Chance will run the women's 5000 meter in the evening. The women's 200 meter dash will wrap up the Mocs' season-opener with Sydney Gautier, Taylow Sawyer and Mercedes Bright.
Â
"Kennedy, Brianna and Anna Kate have been training well and, while not in peak form, should have solid races," Meyer said. "this first indoor meet will be an invaluable learning tool for most of the girls.
Â
"They will make their adjustments, train harder and realize the focus needed and be much better in the next few weeks."
Â
Results will be available at GoMocs.com following the race.
