CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga scored twice in a span of just over three minutes in the first half and added an insurance goal early in the second to earn a 3-0 Southern Conference women's soccer victory over The Citadel Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium.

The Mocs improved to 5-1-4 overall and 1-0-1 in SoCon play with the win, while The Citadel fell to 6-2-2 overall and 1-1-0 in league action.

Both teams defended well to start the match, but Chattanooga broke through the Bulldog defense midway through the first half for the game winner. The Mocs outshot the Cadets 13-7 and held a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. UTC also earned seven corner kicks compared to three for The Citadel.

The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when defender Elise Nystrom converted her first goal of the season off an assist from Quinn Johnson, giving Chattanooga a 1-0 lead at the 21:10 mark. That goal would go on to become the game winner.

Just 3:19 later, the Mocs doubled the advantage. Paige Thomas found the back of the net in the 25th minute for her third goal of the season, finishing a setup from Emily Betterton.

Chattanooga put the match away early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Johnson scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year on a pass from EG Dillard, extending the lead to 3-0. Dillard outdueled her defender, racing down the left sideline before finding Johnson in the box. Johnson finished with a game-high three shots and three shots on goal while adding an assist for a three-point afternoon.

The Mocs' defense limited The Citadel to just one shot on target. Goalkeeper Addie Taylor made one save to record the shutout. The Bulldogs lead the SoCon in goals scored and had two of the top scorers in the league heading into the match today.

Several alumni made the trip to the Scenic City and Finley Stadium and were recognized on the field at halftime. They included Molly Hall Cooper from the first team, Danielle Barr Vandergriff, Ashley Simmons Webb, Skylar Brewer as well as Mocs assistants Zoey Mize and Katie Emig Wright.

The Mocs head to Lexington, Va., to take on VMI in their next match on October 1.
